I can remember being eight years old and walking into that theater and seeing Star Wars for the very first time. It literally sent chills up my spine. I can honestly say that was a turning point for me. I knew from that moment that I was a science fiction fan. I also knew that I was seeing something very special for the very first time.
In case you were born under a rock…or are just a kid, Star Wars (now known as Episode 4) was released in May of 1977. Yeah 33 years ago this year. The series of movies has stood the test of time for over a quarter of a century now. It has spawned numerous books. It is mentioned in anything from novels, to other movies. Yes Star Wars has gone to that special place that few others in the genre go. It is now interwoven in our culture.
Now, I get chills again from this venerable series. No there are no more movies planned. I am talking about the direction the franchise is going in the video game market. There are two games coming out very soon that bear the Star Wars name.
First up is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II
This one looks very promising. It looks pretty gritty and based on what I am hearing, will greatly improve on the game play elements that many found lacking in the first game. The game is due out in October of this year.
The second game and the one that gets me drooling every time I think about is Star Wars: The Old Republic check out the trailer below and tell me that doesn’t get your blood flowing
This is going to be an MMO where you get the chance to play either Jedi or Sith. It has lots of things going for it and shows great promise. This is the one that could very well make me venture into that shadowy place I like to call game nirvana.
Now if I can just figure out how to justify the monthly expense of such a game to my wife.
