Anyone that knows us, will be aware that we have spent most of our summer at one ball field or another. Danielle has just completed her first full season with the Lightning. I really enjoyed watching my daughter and the other girls on the team grow into playing competitive softball.
In the case of my daughter in particular, I was so full of pride watching how tough she played. One memory in particular from one of the last games in a tournament they played really sticks with me. We were playing a night game, and Danielle was up to bat. The opposing pitcher was very powerful, and accurate. Anyone that has seen fast pitch knows that the occasional wild pitch get away from them. My daughter took a very strong pitch directly into the lower shin. It has been rare to see her cry, but this time she nearly buckled with the pain, and the tears began to flow. I was at the fence taking photographs, like any other softball game, and I could see how hard it was for her to shake off this hit. As a testament to her personality, she didn’t leave the field. She limped to first, and worked it out. Even though I was concerned, I couldn’t have been more proud of her in that moment.
This season was filled with moments like that for all the girls. Most were not painful lessons, but there were a lot of things learned. These girls played hard, and I think, they improved a lot from the beginning of the season. I have no doubt that next season will be even more exciting. As a bit of a tribute to the 2010 season, I have taken the opportunity to put together a slide show of their season. I hope you enjoy it.
