Yes, it is January here in the high plains. Yes, as I write this there is about eight inches of powdery snow on the ground. However this awesome photograph serves as a gentle reminder that tornado season is only a few months away. It has been very quiet here in eastern Nebraska for the last couple of summers. I would not be the least bit surprised if this spring was pretty active for us around here.
As to this photograph, I am drawn to it because of the excellent contrast between the tornado and the white clouds that frame the funnel. It is pretty rare to see a tornado take on this kind of color (usually they range in color from light grey to almost black), and with such white clouds. The scene is surreal, and very rare to be sure.
